2025/26 Our Learning

Welcome to our Year 2 class blog 2025!

Each week we will help Mr Marlor write an overview of what we have been learning each week.

Autumn 2 - Factual footprints

Autumn 2 week 4

This week in Year 2’s learning has been ‘out of this world’ with lots of exciting learning across all subjects. On Monday we started our week off with ‘Space Day’ with Year 5! We wore our best space themed outfits and re-enacted the Apollo 11 mission using a green screen background. We then designed our own bottle rockets and used Coca-Cola and Mentos as fuel to launch them into the air!

In English, we have been working hard on our independent writing. We finished our circular narratives based on  “A River” by Marc Martin where we used joining expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and similes to make our writing more detailed and interesting.

In maths, we continued to develop our understanding of shapes. We have explored the properties of regular and irregular 2D shapes by referring to the number of sides and vertices.  We have also been learning about lines of symmetry and completing 2D shapes by drawing the other half of symmetrical shape. We concluded the week by sorting a variety of 2D shapes into a Venn Diagram based on 2 different categories.

In history, we learned about the space race between the U.S.A and the Soviet Union. We then labelled our timelines with events from this period in history and discussed why they were important achievements.

In science, we explored how animals have adapted to their environments. We looked at 6 different habitats and how particular species can survive in different habitats as they are able to find food and shelter.

In design and technology (DT), we began practicing our skills in cutting materials using tools and templates. We focused on safety and accuracy while using scissors and other equipment. Next week we will be using running stitch to sew our pieces of felt together.

In Music, we spent time practicing our nativity songs, getting better at remembering all the lyrics and preparing for our performance.

Autumn 3 Week 3

It has been another action-packed week in Year 2 with lots of fun learning activities and learning our lines for our nativity performance.

In maths We have learning about a variety of 2D shapes, focusing on naming them and describing their properties by referring to the number of sides and vertices.  We have also practised drawing 2D shapes neatly using a ruler and made sure that all sides of a polygon are connected.

In English we have used role play to take ourselves on journey along a river, visiting different settings from our class text. We picked up lots of vocabulary and created expanded noun phrases to describe what we could see, hear and feel. We then created a plan for writing our own circular narrative with our own character.

In science we have been exploring types of habitat and which species of animal live in each habitat. We remembered our outdoor learning around school and animals and plants that we identified in a woodland and pond habitat.

In history, we’ve continued our unit on Space Exploration. This week, we used a time line to order the list of space expeditions to the moon. We learned that the most famous expedition was the Apollo 11 mission as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin were the first people to successfully land on the moon. We are excited for ‘Space day on Monday where we can share our learning with Year 5.

In R.E, we’ve learned about the story of the Angel Gabriel bringing good news to Zechariah and Elizabeth. This led to some thoughtful discussions about what good news means to us and what good news we have received and how we received it.

In computing, learned what makes a good photograph by considering positioning, framing and subject before taking our photos. We then took a variety of photos in the classroom and gave each other

In P.E, we continued to practise our tennis skills using the racquet to hit the ball inside a target before completing rallies with our partner. We were proud of how much we have improved our control and technique over the last 3 weeks.

Autumn 2 Week 2  14.11.25

What a busy week, full of exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum

We started the week with our wonderful Year 2 remembrance worship. We all felt proud of ourselves as we read our lines clearly. Now we are ready to start rehearsing for the Key Stage 1 nativity!

In English, we've been reading an example circular narrative text and identifying different types of writer’s knowledge to include when writing our own circular narrative next week. We have also used our drama skills to step inside a setting and imagine what we would see, hear and feel. Finally, we concluded the week by writing setting descriptions of one of the locations that we will travel to on a boat.

In maths, we’ve been working on adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers, with a particular focus on comparing number sentences and missing number problems.

In D.T we learned how to use a running stitch to attach two pieces of fabric together. After some practice, we gained lots of confidence and decided that some of us will use this type of stitch to make gift pouches for Elf Enterprise week.

In science we recapped our learning from previous weeks before completing our end of unit assessment on living things and habitats.

In R.E we have learned about the Guru Granth Sahib and why it is important to Sikhs. We then completed a blooket quiz to test how much we had remembered from the lesson.

Looking forward to another great week of learning next week.
