2025/26 Our Learning

Autumn 1 - Native Narratives

Autumn 1 Week 7

We have had another busy week. In Maths, we have been looking at multiplication and division. We strategies the week learning how to multiply using the column method. Then, we moved on to dividing. We have been using chunking for long division and the bus stop method for short division calculations. In English, we have been finishing our narrative based on our focus text. We have also moved on to look at non-fiction text types. We are writing a hybrid text linked to our topic. So far, we have written a non-chronological report about The Kingdom of Benin and we have also written instructions linked to our Art learning - How to make a batik design. In Computing, we have been thinking about how we use apps such as Teams, Zoom, Seesaw and emails to be able to communicate in different ways. We have thought about the advantages of these apps. In Science, we have planned an investigation to test mould growth. Our enquiry question is How does light or temperature affect mould growth? We are going to store bread in different places in school to investigate this question. In History, we have been thinking about whether Britain should have invaded the Kingdom of Benin. We have put ourselves in Queen Victoria’s point of view to consider for and against arguments. In Art, we have started to apply the wax onto our fabric to make our batik designs. We used lolly sticks to control where the wax went. It was quite difficult as the hot wax was really runny!

Autumn 1 Week 6

We have had a busy week! In Maths, we have been multiplying using the grid method. We started with integers and we have moved on to multiplying numbers including decimals, using our known facts to help us. In English, we have started to write our own first person narratives based on our focus text The Boy who Harnessed the Wind. In Music, we have continued to look at the song Something Inside so Strong. We have introduced harmonies to our performance. In Computing, we have been looking at what happens when we search for things online. We have created flowcharts to show the process of how the internet works. On Friday, we wore yellow to raise awareness of mental health. This week in Worship and PSHE, we have been talking about what makes us happy and what we think is good for our mental health.

Autumn 1 Week 5

In Maths this week, we have been using the column method to add and subtract and solve multi-step problems. We have also started looking at factors and finding the common factors of different numbers. In English, we have been writing a narrative about a key part of our novel. We have got to the part where there is a drought in Malawi which leads to a famine. We have written a narrative to retell when William went to the government to collect emergency maize. In Science, we have been learning about bacteria and fungi. We have learnt about the negative effects they can have as well as the benefits of them. In Computing, we have been learning about IP addresses. We used a DNS checker to find the IP addresses of different websites to create an address book. In Music, we have been singing Something inside so strong as an ensemble. In PSHE, we have been looking at common problems that happen within friendships and thinking about what advice we would give in those situations.

Autumn 1 Week 4

We have had another busy week. In Maths, we have been using mental methods to add and subtract. We have been using compensation, partitioning and using number bonds to help us. In English, we have been thinking about how we can use action, dialogue and description in our writing. We have written some amazing work, retelling one of the scenes from our novel. In Science, we have been classifying plants into four categories, flowering plants, conifers, ferns and mosses. In PSHE, the fire service came in to discuss fire safety and road safety with us. In RE, we have been researching the Muslim pilgrimage to Hajj. We have also added some more moves to our street dance performance in PE. This week, we have had visitors from Darwen Vale and DACA to talk to us about our high school choices. It was great to hear about what they have to offer!

Autumn 1 Week 3

We have had an amazing week at Robinwood this week! Pictures to follow!

Autumn 1 Week 2

We have had a busy week! In Maths, we have been continuing with rounding. We have been rounding to any required degree of accuracy including to the nearest whole number and decimal place. We have also been multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. In English, we have been thinking more about the narrator of our novel, William. We have thought about adjectives to describe him and placed them on the zone of relevance. We have also inferred his thoughts and feelings about significant events that happened in his life to write a diary entry. In Science, we have been looking at the five key groups of invertebrates (insects, arachnids, annelids, crustaceans and molluscs). We have learnt about their features and examples of them. In Music, we have been looking at the lyrics to Something inside so strong by Labi Siffre. We discussed that the song was inspired by the apartheid in South Africa and we looked for clues and examples of perseverance and determination. In PSHE, we enjoyed our life education session with Steven. We talked all about decisions and discussed lots of scenarios. In RE, we started our new topic Life as a Journey. We started by sharing our own journey in life so far.

Autumn 1 Week 1

We have had a great first week in Year 6! In Maths, we have started our place value unit. We have been reading and writing numbers up to 1,000,000, using commas to help us. We have used our knowledge to label number lines and order and compare numbers. We have also started to work on rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. In English, we have started to read our novel The Boy who Harnessed the Wind. In the book, the narrator talks about witch doctors in Africa, which the people believed we magical and could cure illnesses as well as send curses to enemies. Next week, we are going to be writing a persuasive advert to encourage people to use them so we have thought about key features to make a plan. In Science, we have started to look at our topic on classification. We have started by looking at animals, specifically vertebrates. We looked at the 5 main groups (birds, fish, mammals, amphibians and reptiles) and their key features. We have created some lovely information texts! In History, we have started to learn about The Kingdom of Benin. As it is not a well-known topic. We thought about what would be useful information to know and did some research on the ipads. In Art, we looked at artwork from Benin, which features a lot of animals. This is because they believed some animals represented the qualities of a king or leader. We have thought about animals that we think would be a good representation of a king to sketch. Finally, in PE, we have started our unit on street dance. We have made a start on our routine and learnt the first three steps.
