Week 6

Another Fantastic Week in Year 1!

We have had another busy and exciting week in Year 1, with lots of fantastic learning and practical activities!

In Writing, we continued our work on Old Bear, focusing on writing full sentences from the perspective of Tin Dog. We practised using I to write in the first person and explored new vocabulary to describe how Tin Dog might be feeling as a lost toy. We created missing posters for Tin Dog, using adjectives to describe his appearance and remembering to use capital letters for names. We also learnt how to write questions, exploring different question words and remembering to use question marks at the end of our sentences.

In Maths, we started our new learning about addition. We explored the meaning of parts and wholes, using cubes and counters to investigate how two parts can make a whole. We used part-whole models to represent numbers and discovered that we can make the same whole in different ways. We also began writing addition number sentences to match our models.

In Geography, we learnt about the four compass directions: north, south, east and west. We practised using these directions to describe where different places are located and developed our understanding of how compass directions can help us read and use maps.

In RE, we learnt more about Sukkot and the story of the Exodus in the Torah, exploring how the Jewish people left Egypt and travelled through the wilderness. We found out how Jewish families celebrate Sukkot by building a sukkah and spending time eating together inside it. We then went outside to build our own sukkahs, helping us understand how these temporary shelters remind Jewish people of their time in the wilderness.

In PE, we enjoyed a fantastic sensory circuit with lots of different apparatus set up in the hall. We had great fun exploring the different activities, developing our balance, coordination and movement skills as we moved around the circuit.

In PSHE, we explored our feelings and discussed how we can cope when our feelings are hurt. We talked about different situations that might make us feel upset and shared ideas about how we can manage these feelings, including talking to someone we trust, using kind words and finding ways to help ourselves feel calm.

In Art, we began creating our final piece inspired by the Tree of Life. We used the skills we have been practising over the past few weeks, including folding, twisting, curling and shaping paper, to begin creating our own three-dimensional trees. We enjoyed seeing how our different paper techniques could be combined to bring our artwork to life.

It has been another wonderful week in Year 1! We are really proud of everyone's hard work, creativity and enthusiasm for learning. Well done, Year 1!

Week 5

Another Busy Week in Year 1!

We have had another exciting week in Year 1 with lots of different learning and some special activities too!

In Writing, we completed our independent writing based on Old Bear. We worked hard to retell the story independently, remembering to use capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and joining words. We were really proud of the writing everyone produced! We also began our Black History Month learning by finding out about Mary Seacole and writing our own sentences about her life and why she is remembered.

We also enjoyed a special Poetry Workshop this week. We loved taking part in the activities and exploring poetry together during our visitor’s session.

In Maths, we recapped our learning about place value within 10. We practised recognising and ordering numbers and developed our understanding of number lines by working out which numbers were missing.

In Computing, we learnt how to use a keyboard to type. We wrote sentences about ourselves, focusing particularly on using the space bar correctly between words. We also had lots of fun using a typing game to help develop our keyboard skills and typing fluency.

We had a fantastic OAL session with Louise this week. We enjoyed learning outdoors and had great fun building our own sukkahs, linking our outdoor learning with our work in RE.

In RE, we learnt about Sukkot, a Jewish festival that remembers the Exodus and celebrates harvest. We explored the story of the Exodus and used freeze frames to represent different parts of the story, thinking carefully about how the people might have been feeling at different points.

In Geography, we recapped our understanding of human and physical features. We then explored different places and began to think about which places are near to where we live and which are further away.

In PE, we continued developing our fundamental movement skills. This week, our focus was on throwing and catching, working on our accuracy, control and coordination.

In Science, we had a fantastic practical lesson exploring our five senses. We put our senses to the test with a smelling challenge, I Spy, sound bingo and feely bags where we had to guess and describe hidden objects using only touch. We also explored our sense of taste by trying different fruits and describing their flavours.

It has been another action packed week in Year 1. We have loved seeing everyone getting involved, trying new things and working hard across all of our learning!

Week 4

We have had another busy week filled with lots of fantastic learning in Year 1!

In Writing, we have been busy with the writing phase of our Old Bear unit. We retold the story by writing the opening, build up, problem and ending. We worked hard to include everything we have been learning, including capital letters, full stops, plurals and repeated language from the story. In Maths, we compared groups and numbers using the language more, fewer and the same. We then introduced greater than, less than and equal to and practised using the <, > and = symbols when comparing numbers.

In PE, we learnt how to jump safely from a standing position, taking off on two feet and landing on two feet. We also revisited our balancing and hopping skills and worked hard to stay controlled as we moved. In Geography, we continued exploring our local area and learnt about human and physical features. We identified human features such as houses, roads, shops and the war memorial, and physical features such as trees, grass and hills. In RE, we continued our learning about Harvest and explored how Christians put their faith into action. We discussed how Christians can show love and care for others by sharing, giving food and supporting charities when harvests have failed. In Art, we continued exploring how we can shape paper to create 3D artwork. We experimented with different techniques, including a table fold, curve, spiral, zigzag and loop, and used these to make our drawings stand up from the page. In Computing, we used a paint program to create pictures of ourselves. We practised using different shape tools and learnt how to add text to our pictures. In Science, we learnt about the different parts of the human body. We had lots of fun playing games to identify different body parts and thought about which parts we have two of. We then drew and labelled the basic parts of the body.

In Handwriting, we have been practising our letter formation and focusing on using our lead ins correctly.

We also enjoyed a little Friday treat as part of our Macmillan Coffee Morning! We loved choosing a cake or biscuit and joining in with this special whole school event while helping to support a very important cause.

It has been another wonderful week in Year 1. We are really proud of how hard everyone is working and the enthusiasm they are showing for their learning!

Week 3

We have had another busy and exciting week in Year 1!

In Writing, we explored how characters feel at different points in Old Bear and wrote sentences to describe their feelings. We also practised using time words to order events and adding the ed ending to show that something has already happened. We have now started the writing phase of our unit and have been busy finding and creating sentences ready for our own writing.

In Maths, we have been finding one more and one less than a number. We also practised counting backwards from 10 and comparing different groups.

As part of our Geography learning, we went on a lovely walk around Hoddlesden to identify features of our local area. We spotted The Ranken, the war memorial, the deli shop and Millennium Green. We enjoyed exploring our village and discussing the different human and physical features we could see. In Science, we continued our learning about seasonal changes. We looked for signs of autumn and learnt about deciduous and evergreen trees, exploring the differences between them and what happens to their leaves throughout the year.

In Computing, we learned about the different parts of a desktop computer and practised using a mouse to click, drag and drop. In PE, we continued to develop our balancing skills. We practised balancing on one leg and challenged ourselves to hop in different directions while staying balanced and in control. In RE, we learnt about successful and failed harvests. We discussed how Christians put their faith into action by showing love, sharing with others and supporting charities. We thought about the different ways we can help people who may not have enough food. In Art, we explored how we can turn our artwork from 2D to 3D. We drew different patterns before cutting them out and sticking them onto paper in different directions to create exciting three dimensional artwork.

It has been another wonderful week in Year 1. Everyone has continued to work hard, try their best and show lots of enthusiasm for their learning. We are very proud of you all!

Week 2

Another Brilliant Week in Year 1!

We have had another busy and exciting week in Year 1!

In Writing, we used adjectives to describe the characters from Old Bear and practised adding s and es to make plurals. We then used our new vocabulary to write descriptive sentences. We also completed our first independent write, and we were incredibly impressed by everyone’s fantastic effort!

In Maths, we counted objects, including objects within a larger group, and represented numbers using tens frames. We practised recognising numbers written as words and counting on from any given number.

In Geography, we went outside to observe our immediate environment. We spotted lots of different features, including houses, roads, trees, our playground and the school building. We also explored our surroundings in Science, using a checklist to identify signs of autumn and learning about the changes that happen during this season.

In PE, we developed our balancing skills and practised throwing and catching a ball using an underarm throw. In Computing, we learned about the different parts of a desktop computer and practised using a mouse to click, drag and drop.

During Class Worship, we used our hand prayers to think about different people we would like to pray for. We then shared our prayers in small groups. In PSHE, we discussed why classroom rules are important and created our own rules to help make Year 1 a happy and safe place to learn.

In RE, we learned about Harvest and why it is important to Christians. We talked about our favourite foods and explored how farmers harvest wheat, which can then be used to make bread.

In Art, we looked closely at the sculpture Other by Samantha Stephenson. Inspired by her work, we created our own paper sculptures using scissors, glue and a range of rolling techniques.

It has been another wonderful week. Everyone has continued to show such a positive attitude and enthusiasm for learning. We are very proud of you all!

Week 1 

A Fantastic First Week in Year 1!

What an amazing start we have had in Year 1! We have been so impressed by everyone’s positive behaviour, enthusiasm and wonderful attitude towards learning.

In Maths, we have been counting, practising our number formation and sorting objects in different ways. In Writing, we began our exciting new unit based on Old Bear. We explored new vocabulary and used it to write simple sentences.

During PE, we developed our movement and fundamental skills through a range of fun activities. In Science, we began learning about the seasons. We found out which month and season we were born in and looked for signs that autumn is beginning.

We also enjoyed our first Music lesson with Mr Richards, where we were introduced to the ukuleles! In Computing, we sorted objects into those that are and are not examples of technology. We learned that technology is made by humans to help us.

What a brilliant first week!

We are incredibly proud of how well everyone has settled into Year 1 and cannot wait for another exciting week of learning.
